Book Review: The Kensei, A Lawson Vampire Novel. By Jon F. Merz

The back cover reads:
Meet Lawson, a cynical, quick-witted vampire chosen to be one of the elite:  A fixer, charged with protecting the Balance, the sacred secret existence of a race of vampires living and coexisting alongside humanity for millennia.  Part cop, part spy, and part commando—James Bond with fangs—he mixes shrewd cunning with unmatched lethality to get his job done and protect his people.  Lawson tries his best to dismantle conspiracies, dispatch bad guys, and live long enough to get home.

In The Kensei, a battle-weary Lawson heads to Japan for some much-needed rest and relaxation and some advanced ninja training.  But he no sooner steps of the plane and lands in the mist of a Yajuza turf war orchestrated by a shadowy figure know only as the Kensei.  With the help of former KGB assassin Talya, Lawson must put a stop to the Kensei’s organ-trafficking network, prevent the creation of an army of vampire human hybrids, and save his own skin in the process.

The Kensei iss a thrill ride of the first order, filled with exciting martial arts action and vibrant characters, set against the fascinating backdrop of the Tokyo underworld.

This is my first time reading Jon F. Merz.   The Kensei is written in the first person.  Although the book was really good and action packed.  I wish it was written in the third person.  So that we could have known what the other characters were thinking.   The author did a good job as letting us in, by the wonderful descriptions and witty dialogue.   I thoroughly enjoyed it.  As a person who is into martial arts and Zen, the fight scenes were good, the backdrop of Japan and Tokyo makes me want to fly there and see. Definitely a good read.

I probably will read the other book in the series.  This was the last one, which means I have to start at the beginning.  I knew I should have started at the beginning but sometimes when barrowing books at the Library a person gets what they can get.

Book Review: Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks

The cover flap reads:
When a mysterious young women named Katie appears in the small North Carolina town of Southport, her sudden arrival raises questions about her past.  Beautiful yet self-effacing, Katie seems determined to avoid forming personal ties until a series of events draws her into two reluctant relationships:  One with Alex, a widowed store owner with a kind heart and two young children: and another with plainspoken single neighbor, Jo.  Despite her reservations, Katie slowly begins to let down her guard, putting down roots in the close-knot community and becoming increasingly attached to Alex and his family.

But even as Katie begins to fall in love, she struggles with the dark secret that still haunts and terrifies her… a past that set her on a fearful, shattering journey across the country, to the sheltered oasis of Southport.

With Jo’s empathetic and stubborn support, Katie eventually realized that she must choose between a life of transient safety an one of riskier rewards…and that in the darkest hour, love is the only true safe haven.

This is the first time reading one of Nicololas Sparks books.  I have seen some of his movies and have enjoyed them but to read the words is quite different.  I really enjoyed reading this tale.  There is a good reason his work has been turned into movies.  He is a very good storyteller.  My preference is still fantasy fiction although I will continue to read different genre during the year long challenge.

This book challenge has brought me to new authors with wonderful stories but I have learned so much in their work.  My challenge was to read 50 books this year, so far I have read 23 including reading writing books.  I can only say that this challenge is one that I am happy to continue.

Book Review: Little Bee by Chris Cleave

The Back Cover Reads:
This is the story of two women.  Their lives collide one fateful day, and one of them has to make a terrible choice, the kind of choice we hope you never have to face.  Two years later, they meet again—the story starts here…

Once you have read it, you’ll want to tell your friends about it.  When you do, please don’t tell them what happens.  The magic is in how the story unfolds.

This is my first time reading this author.  The story of the two women is based on reality, even though the characters are fictional.   I really liked both women, what they went through, and their dilemma.  I was caught up in there lives.

I will say right out I didn’t like the ending, only because I like reading ending where everyone is happy.  (Unrealistic I know.) This book is based on the real world.  That doesn’t mean that the book is not good.  It is absolutely good, well written and moving.  I couldn’t stop reading it.

Chris Cleave is the author of Incendiary which is another book I will have to check out.  Anyway read Little Bee, you will not be disappointed.

Book Review: Jane and the Madness of Lord Byron. By Stephanie Barron

The Back Cover Reads:
The restorative power of the ocean brings Jane Austen and her beloved brother Henry to Brighton after Henry’s wife is lost to a long illness.  But the crowded, glittering resort is far from peaceful, especially when the lifeless body of a beautiful young society miss is discovered in the bedchamber of none other than George Gordon--otherwise known as Lord Byron.  As a poet and a seducer of women, Byron has carved out a shocking reputation for himself.—but no one would ever accuse him of being capable of murder.  Now it falls to Jane to pursue this puzzling investigation and discover just how “mad, bad, and dangerous to know” Byron truly is.  And she must do so without falling victim to the charming versifier’s legendary charisma, lest she, too, become a cautionary example for the ages.

I must confess this is the first time reading Stephanie Barron.  I love the Jane Austen stories of Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibilities, but with this book the author actually is writing about Jane Austen herself.  I found myself in the world of 1813 England which is what drew me to Jane Austen in the first place.  As a modern woman of today I do not wish to live in that era but Stephanie told the story from a point of view of strength for women.  I really enjoyed it.  It had humor and lots of really cool words for a writer like me to look up and fuss over.

The story itself weaved into a hypnotic mystery that had me turning page after page until the final reveal.  Very well done.   I will read more of this author.

Book Review: Invincible by Sherrilyn Kenyon

On the back cover it reads:
Death clapped the tall one on the shoulder.  Nick, meet my two companions, Pain and Suffering.”  Pain was the big one and Suffering the smaller of the two.  “You’ll have to ignore Suffering since he’s mute.”

“Mute?

“Mmmm… you know, you should always suffer in silence.”

Nick would laugh, but he was afraid Pain might hit him for it and since he was Pain, best to leave him be.  “Nice meeting you two…”  He looked around nervously, “Oh wait! I hear my mom calling.  I better go see what she needs.”  He turned to leave, only to find that his legs were locked again.

Death sauntered over to stand in front of him. “Don’t play coy, Cajun, We don’t like that.”

Yeah, and he didn’t like being stuck in the kitchen with ghouls either.  Sometimes you just didn’t get what you wanted.

The next book in the Chronicles of Nick.  Nick being a minor character in the Dark Hunter Series but is now in the forefront.  It is amazing how big this story is getting.  Sherrilyn never seems to run out of really cool powers or objects and characters.  To understand this book I advise reading all the other books first.  It took me a while to catch up but now that I am, I'm in awe of the story world.   Each character builds upon the next and the world gets bigger with re-occurring characters that are so fascinating that the reader cannot help but hang on for dear life.   (Sherrilyn is one of my favorite authors, can you tell.)

Book Review: The Good Sister by Drusilla Campbell

Here is what the good reads said about it.
Roxanne Callahan has always been her younger sister's caretaker. Now married, her happiness is threatened when beautiful and emotionally unstable Simone, suffering from crippling postpartum depression, commits an unforgivable crime for which Roxanne comes to believe she is partially responsible.
In the glare of national media attention brought on her sister, Roxanne fights to hold her marriage together as she is drawn back into the pain of her troubled past and relives the fraught relationship she and Simone shared with their narcissistic mother. At the same time, only she can help Simone's nine year old daughter, Merell, make sense of the family's tragedy.
Cathartic, lyrical, and unflinchingly honest, The Good Sister is a novel of four generations of women struggling to overcome a legacy of violence, lies and secrecy, ultimately finding strength and courage in their love for each other.

I read the other reviews and I agree with some and not with others.  One person said she wanted more about the disease.  That is a hard one.  To get into the deep part of depression is to live it.  To write about it is only a small part of the story.

The depth of despair, the feeling that dying would be better than a life like this.  The feeling that you wish you were someone else, anyone else.  The hopelessness.  If the writer has written about the depression itself the book would have been so depressing no one would finish it.  The story is more than just the disease of postpartum depression; it is a look at how it affects everyone in the family.  It is also a look at how we perceive our family and loved ones.  There is more than one side.  What may look rosey is in reality not.

I believe the writer did a good job.  She gave glimpses of what a depressed person would feel or how they would react or not react as it goes.  In trying to help another we become an enabler of sorts.  The book is a glaring example of that.  It is human nature at its best and worst.

Book Review: Siren Song by Cat Adams.

Back cover of the book:
Bodyguard Celia Graves plies her trade in a world where vampires roam the alleys of Tinsel town, street-corner psychic have real powers, and cops use memory-enhancement spells.  Celia always thought she was an ordinary human, albeit one with a clairvoyant for a best friend and a ghost for a little sister.
A recent vampire attack made Celia and abomination.  She finds sunlight painful and must take all her food in liquid form, but she still has her soul.  She’s slowly adjusting to her new “lifestyle” (therapy sessions and all) when she discovers that the attack awakened a hidden part of her heritage:  Celia is part Siren, able to enthrall men… and enrage women… without half-trying.
Her best friend’s murder is still unsolved: the cops are convinced Celia should be in jail, if not staked; and her old lover, magician Bruno DeLuca, has something important to tell her.  To top it all off, Celia’s been summoned to the siren’s island for what might be a battle to the death—assuming she’s not killed before she even sets sail.
Celia Graves has more than one enemy.  Some of them want her blood.  Some of them want her soul.  All of them want her dead.

Cat Adams is the same as C.T. Adams and Cathy Clamp.  This is my first time reading their work.  Siren Song is the second book of the series.  I hate to read books out of order but I had taken this one out of the Library.  So you guessed it.  Now I have to go back and read the first one, not that I’m complaining, to understand a lot of what was said in the second one.  I just love to delve deep into the books and really get a sense of the world and the characters.

Siren song is really good.  There is a lot I didn’t understand about the world that Celia lives in, because I haven’t read the first one, but it was interesting. I like the character, but the whole book was done in her point of view.  There was a lot that could have been told about the world had the authors chosen to use an omnipresent view, however they did a beautiful job.

The story was intense, full of surprises and revelations.   With each chapter I was beginning to wonder how it would end, why it was happening, and who was behind it all.  Those questions were answered only to have more questions come up for the next one.  There was some interesting secondary and third sub-characters that I would have liked to know better.  Now I am compelled to read the first one then maybe read this one again, then of course read the last one.  I just love a good series of book that continue the character and watch them grow.  This was a great read and a new notch on a favorite author.  I’m planning on reading the entire Sazi Series.

A Book Review: “Tandem” by Tracy Bateman, Author of Thirsty.

Six months ago, brutal murders shook the small Ozark town—murders that stopped after a house fire reportedly claimed the killer’s life.  Lauryn McBride’s family auction house has taken responsibility for the estate sale of the victims—the enigmatic Markus Chisom.  Submerging herself in Chisom’s beautiful but strange world, Lauryn welcomes the reprieve from watching Alzheimer’s steal her father from her, piece by piece.  She soon realized that centuries – old secrets tie Abbey Hills to the Chisom estate and a mysterious evil will do anything to make sure those secrets stay hidden.  Even the man who grew up loving her may not be able to protect Lauryn from the danger.

When Amede Dastillon received an unexpected package from Abbey Hills, she hopes it might be the key in tracking down her beloved long-estranged sister.  Visiting Abbey Hills seems the logical next step in her search, but Amede is unusually affected by the town.

Two women brought together by questions that seem to have no answers.  Can they overcome the loss and darkness threatening to devour them—or will their own demons condemns them to an emotional wasteland?

This was my first book from this author.  One of the things that I liked about the book is the author didn’t get really gory when describing certain parts.  However the description of certain scenes was extremely well done.

My Review:
She did a good job in explaining the relation ship between father and daughter and the hardships of his Alzheimer’s disease.  There was a Christian undertone in the book.  The story about Vampires and Alzehimers takes up equal parts.  The Author does a great job in maintaining three different points of view.  They were consistent and I always knew who was speaking next.  The ending wasn’t as big as I had hoped but the mystery stayed until the very end.

I recommend the book to anyone who likes reading about vampires.  To find out more about Tracy Bateman click here. http://www.traceybateman.com/

Book Review: The Ghost King, Transitions III by RA Salvatore.

The Ghost King shook its head wildly, and Guenhwyvar went flying away.  Then the beast swung its head back into the room with battering ram force at Drizzt, a blow that would have killed him had it hit him squarely.

But no one ever hits Drizzt Uo’Urden squarely.

As the head swung in, Drizzt dived over sideways, just ahead of it.  Still, the sheer weight of the glancing blow had him rolling in an attempt to absorb the force, until he ran out of the room, coming up hard into the wrecked chamber’s side wall, a burst of embers flying up behind him.  Stung and a bit dazed, but hardly down, Drizzt rushed back at the beast…

The final book from the transitions series.  The transition is final.  Drizzt and a array of priest and wizards battle The Ghost King.  But the beautiful Catti-brie, Drizzt wife of eight years is lost.  Lost to her world and lost to Drizzt forever, among most of the others.  The world of the Forgotten Realms is forever changed.

This is the book that I was dreading.  I knew that Catti-brie would be no more, I can’t even say it, passing on.  But life must go on.  I feel for Drizzt and for myself.  I know that he will miss her as I will.

Book Review: The Pirate King Transitions II Drizzt Do’Urdan Series of books. By RA Salvatore.

In the black flesh?  The portly proprietor said as the drow came up to the bar, “What bring you back to Luskin after these long years?”  He extended his hand, which Drizzt grasped and shook warmly.

“Well met Arumn Gardpeck,” The dark elf replied, “Perhaps I have returned merely to see if you continue to ply your trade—take comfort that some things never remain the same.”

“What else would an old fool like me do?”  Arumn replied, “Have you sailed in with Deudermont then?”

“Deudermont?  Is Sea Sprite in port?”

“Aye, and with a trio of ships of a Waterdhavian lord beside her,” Arumn replied.

“And spoiling for a fight….”

This is the second book in the Transition series.  There are changes about in the world of Drizzt Do’Urdan and his friends.   The changes are major and everyone including the city of Luskin is in trouble.

RA Salvatore’s writing is vivid with rich characters, great fighting scenes and a Forgotten Realm world.    If you haven’t been introduced to Drizzt Do’Urdan than you are truly missing a wonderful character and a great story.

I have read all except The Cleric Quintet series which is something I will do soon.  I find the changes in the Forgotten Realm drastic.  I love the characters of Drizzt Do’Urdan a dark elf, Catti-bri a human women, Wolfgar a Barbarian, Regis a Halfling, Brunor a dwarf.  And of course Guenhwyvar the black panther, friend to Drizzt Do’Urdan.   With each book I read I know at some point I will have to face the fact that Drizzt will outlive all of them, being an elf.  It seems the story is going in that direction.  The characters are leaving the storyline and new stories and characters are going to come in.  For that reason I have been reluctant to continue.  But because I know all things must come to an end, just a RA Salvatore and Drizzt know, the future will hold new and wondrous things.

If you want to read this story, start at the beginning.  It is well worth it.

Until next time.

Book Review: No Mercy by Sherrilyn Kenyon

In the heart and in the soul.
Evil take it wicked toll.
When moonlight shines
Like flowing blood,
Over the Earth,
The Daimon will flood.

Live fast, fight hard, and if you have to die, then take as many of your enemies with you as you can.  That is the Amazon credo and it was one Samia lived and died by.  Now in contemporary New Orleans, the immortal Amazon warrior is about to learn that there’s a worse evil coming to slaughter mankind than she’s ever faced before.

Shapeshifter Dev Peltier has stood guard at the front of Sanctuary for almost two hundred years, and in that time he’s seen it all.  Or so he thought.  Now their enemies have discovered a new source of power—one that makes a mockery of anything faced to date.

The war is on and Dev and Sam are guarding ground zero.  But in order to win, they will have to break the most cardinal of all rules, and pray it doesn’t unravel the universe as we know it.

The latest book in the Saga of the Dark Hunters.  Sherrilyn Kenyon continues to delve deep into mythology of Gods and Goddesses that reek havoc among the humans.  The Dark Hunters are ever facing enemies that are far greater than before.  Each book is filled with fascinating stories and characters that make you want more.

Book Review: “Captive Desires” By Diane Whiteside

Quiet Danae Livingston has two lives.  One is her lifeline, a career as a hardworking member of a top New York dance troupe:  The other is her secret passion.  Fanfic author who writes scorching tales about the haunting world of Torhtremer and about Alekhsiy, her favorite resident hero.  The only time her worlds merge is at GrifficCon, the summer’s largest science-fiction convention.

There, an obsessed fan prowls the crowded convention halls, hunting for the one author who can rewrite Torhtremer’s saga to his own twisted liking and have the legendary villain Azherbhai win everything.

But Alekhsiy and Torhtremer are far more real than Danae or her devotees could ever imagine.  Knowing that danger from Earth threatens his home once again, Alekhsiy comes to GriffinCon to stop it, even if it means destroying the unknown dancer who’s saved his life so many times.

Soon fantasy and reality will merge, swords and sorcery will cross, and the sensual world of one woman’s vivid imagination will be almost impossible to resist—or to escape.

This is my first time reading from this author.  While I enjoyed the story I have a few things to say regarding her writing.  First: at times I was unsure as to who was talking.  It wasn’t always clear.  At other time I was unsure as to what was happening and to whom.  A few times I was quite mixed up.  At those times I wanted to put the book down.

Second:  during the sex scenes, the author used vulgar words that turned me off instead of turning me on.  Up until those words the scene was very good and sensual.  I almost put the books down during those times.

I have read over 21 books from Sherrilyn Kenyon and in each she has about three sex scenes or more and in none of them does she put vulgar words that turn a person off.

The words I don’t like in this book start with an F and a C, and they refer to the act of sex and a body part.  I am turned off by this writer.  It pains me to say this; where as I think writers are really cool people especially since I am one of them.  However I feel there are many ways to write sex scenes without becoming vulgar.  It is a great way to drive your audience away.

Although I like the story, if I read another one of her books with vulgar language that turned me off it will be my last.  Some people may like that but I find it distasteful.

Until next time.

The character of Syn is extremely interesting.  His life as portrayed by Sherrilyn Kenyon is beyond belief.  And yet at every turn he is amazing in how he deal with it.
Shahara is dangerous and the interaction between the two is the stuff of legend lovers.  With each page turned more and more intrigue is unleashed leaving the reader desperate to find out what happens to them. Once you begin reading you will never want to stop.

Born of Fire is a continuous story from the first book ‘Born of Night.’  The characters are wonderful and the world interesting.  A great read, you will not be disappointed.

Book Review: Dream Hunter by Sherrilyn Kenyon

We are the Dolophoni, Diligent, Vigilant, Fierce and inescapable, Servants of the Furies, we are the right hand of justice and no one stands before us…

The son of Wardraft and Hate, Cratis spent eternity battling for the ancient gods who birthed him.  He was death to any who crossed him.  Until the day he laid down his arms and walked into self-imposed exile.  Now an ancient enemy has been unleased and our dreams are his chosen battlefield.  The only hope we  have is the one god who swears he will never fight again.

As a Dream-Hunter, Delphine has spent eternity protecting mankind from the predators who prey on our unconscious state.  But now that her allies have been turned, she knows in order to survive, the Dream-Hunters need a new leader.  Someone who can train them to fight their new enemies.  Cratius is her only hope, but she is a bitter reminder of why he chose to lay down his arms.

Time is running out and if she can’t win him to her cause, mankind will be slaughtered and the world we know will soon cease to exist.

This is one in the series of books about the Dark Hunter world.  To understand this book and what is going on it is a good idea to begin at the beginning, however each book is complete on its own. If you like this one, maybe you will be willing to take another journey to the beginning.
